What is soy milk?

Whether you call it soya or soy, the product is the same. Soya milk is a plant based non-dairy drink that comes from the soya bean plant. It has been a staple within the Chinese diet for thousands of years as the local people consider it as sacred as rice, wheat and barley.

The production process of soya milk involves a complex method. The nature of the bean is low in acid which means that they are aseptic and need to be protected from any harmful bacteria. The manufacturing of the milk starts with splitting the soybeans in half, they are then cooked in steam and grind down with water until smooth. After this, the milk is left to sterilise and then to cool down ready for you to drink!

Is soya milk better than cows milk?

Soy Milk and other dairy alternatives have become more popular in recent times as people become more conscious of the wellbeing of themselves and the planet. There are various reasons to why people prefer soya milk to cows:

Lactose Intolerance: The sugar lactose that is found in cow's milk can cause digestive problems, however soya milk is free from any lactoses.

Cancer Prevention: There are studies to suggest that non-dairy milk products are better in preventing cancers, in particular breast cancer. This is because soya milk contains low amounts of saturated fat and hormone interfering chemicals.

Environmental Benefits: The production of soya milk uses less than a third of water compared to cow’s milk and also produces lower greenhouse gas emissions.
