Chinese New Year desserts to make your guests smile

 

For many of us, desserts are the best part of any meal! When it comes to the Chinese New Year and it’s desserts, rich and delicious ingredients do not go a miss…

Traditional Chinese New Year Dessert 

 

Here at Sing Kee, one of our favourite dessert recipes is the Nian Gao - Chinese New Year with Red Bean Paste. For many people, this traditional recipe brings back an abundance of happy memories and nostalgia of mum perfecting this cake in the kitchen for all the family to enjoy! Here’s how to make it yourself…

 

Ingredients:

 

¼ tsp + ⅛ tsp baking soda (used separately)

8oz of sweet rice flour

1 egg + 1/2 additional beaten egg

5tbsp melted coconut oil

1/2 cup maple syrup

1 cup water

2 cups red bean paste

 

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350. Prepare your baking dish with either coconut oil and dust with a few tbsp of sweet rice flour and set it to the side

 

  1. Stir together the 1/4 cup of maple syrup with the red bean paste

 

  1. In a bowl, stir together the baking soda, sweet rice flour, melted coconut oil, egg, 1/2 cup of maple syrup, and water until you have a smooth consistency

 

  1. Scoop 1 1/2 cups of the nian gao batter into the baking dish so that the batter covers the entire bottom of the dish. Spoon over the red bean filling into puddles all over the batter, this doesn’t need to be perfectly even - the more rustic the better

 

  1. Spoon over the rest of the batter and use the back of your spoon to slightly swirl the batter and red bean filling

 

  1. Bake at 350 for 1 hr and 15 minutes until golden brown. It will be slightly crispy on top. Leave to cool and enjoy!
