It’s the 1st of December and here in the UK we are truly feeling winters arrived. With a drop in temperatures we thought we would share some of our favourite Chinese meals for such cold weather, give you a little inspiration for dinner and light snacks for the season.

 

Rice Balls: Tang Yuán


Rice Balls are a popular Chinese food as well as the traditional festival food to symbolise family reunion and happiness during the Lantern Festival. In some areas in southern China, people eat it on Winter Solice as well. According to Chinese medicine theory, glutinous rice is good for the human body and is said to help keep out the coldness. As humans are easier to get a cold in winter, the hot Rice Balls would be a good choice for the winter warmer our body needs. The common fillings are sweet black sesame paste and peanut paste. If boiled together with some rice wine, the function of keeping out the coldness would be better. 

Stir Fry Chinese Yam and Black Fungus : Mù ěr chǎo shān yào


Chinese Yam is a very popular winter food and is said to have many benefits for the body during the season. It is said that it can soften the lungs for stopping a cough in cold and dry winters, and protect the heart and cerebral vessels from the discomfort caused by the large difference of temperatures bweteen indoors and outdoors.

Stir-fry Chinese Yam with Black Fungus is tasty, crisp and refreshing, but you could also add more vegetables to give you a greater contrast with the meal.

Red Dates & Lotus Seed Porridge: Hóng zǎo lián zǐ zhōu


A boost for your circulation in the winter months, Red Dates and Lotus Seeds Porridge can help warm the body up and is said to nourish your blood. Meanwhile, as red dates and lotus seeds are of highly nutritious value, this dish has the effect to benefit many other areas of the human body including the spleen, stomach and heart.. It is suitable for most people, in particular, women, the elderly, teenagers and people who just have recovered from an illness, and needing some of the TLC treatment (Tender Loving Care). A very simple recipe and is a quick meal: simply boil pitted red dates, lotus seeds and rice together with sugar till they become soft and thick.
