Discover the best Korean snacks with Sing Kee’s new in products

Tasty, mouth-watering and bursting with flavour, Korean food is some of the best out there. Although Korea is best known for technology, recently, after the popular dish Kimchi became a global sensation, their delicious cuisine has also come to light. Not too sure about Korean cuisine? Don’t worry! We’ve prepared for you a guide on Korean food, what Korean people eat, how to prepare it and where to source the ingredients from.

The basics

Let us start with the basics. The backbone of Korean cuisine is rice. A bowl of rice per person is served with almost every meal and a bowl of stew is also served one bowl per person. Sometimes, noodles may replace the rice but on very few occasions. The main and side dishes are all served in the middle of the table with choices often consisting of seafood, meat, tofu and sometimes stew.

Korean side dishes

Side dishes or Banchan are also very popular in Korean cuisine with side dishes acting as a staple and served alongside the main food with every meal. You will find at least a few side dishes with each meal. This often distinguishes Korean food from other cuisines. The Koreans are masters of preservation and therefore unsurprisingly many of their side dishes are pickled. Sea food is also a popular option for side dishes. Kimchi is one of the most famous side dishes in Korea. With tangy pickled cabbage balanced by a salty edge, this is only one of the amazing side dishes Korea has to offer.

Traditional Korean meals

Some traditional ingredients used in Korean dishes include:
·      Scallions
·      Chili pepper paste (kochujang)
·      Sesame oil
·      Chili pepper flakes (kochukaru)
·      Soy sauce
·      Garlic
·      Ginger
·      Soybean paste (daenjang)

Due to Korea being a peninsula, seafood is a popular choice and makes a regular appearance on the dinner table. In recent years however, meat has also become quite popular and is now used just as often as seafood. Vegetables are also a very generously used ingredient particularly appearing in pickles or salads to be served as side dishes. They are also cleverly incorporated into the main dishes such as stews and stir fry making Korean cuisine healthy Asian food.
